The Manning’s School Debating Society’s participation in the 2025 JDAO from Jan. 7-10 (Jamaica Debate Academy & Open) Workshop at the University of the West Indies Mona Campus was an invaluable experience, made possible by Extracurricular Coordinator, Mrs. Bailey-Moore and Staff Advisor, Mrs. Whyte-Johnson. Despite arriving a day

late, the eight-member team, divided into three groups, showcased determination and adaptability in the impromptu debates.  Team 1 triumphed in matches against York Castle High and Campion College, with Deandra Irving earning Best Speaker and overall recognition as Top Speaker. Team 2 claimed victories over Clarendon College and received standout performances from Dania Powell and Jon-Kristoff Williams.

Team 3, despite initial challenges delivered a win against a composite team, with Jodeen Scott also earning Best Speaker. While the final rounds proved challenging, the experience highlighted the team’s potential and areas for growth. The Workshop enhanced their quick thinking, teamwork and eloquence, leaving a lasting impact and setting a strong foundation for future successes, not only within the debating community, but overall academic persuits.
